Down the Rabbit Hole With Alicewinks

Disclosure: this is a sponsored post. Also, I may or may not have brushed my teeth before writing this (don't ask) I've recently been wondering about reading chapter books to the frog princess. Not that we are done with picture books, mind you but, I've just been wondering when (and what) I could introduce these gems to her.

Rumor has it that I was sort of a book purist. It took me awhile to get into audio books but once I gave them a try, I was hooked (it also meant I could finish more books in less time!). When the e-books went on the market, I was wary because I've always loved the feel of a book in my hands and I thought nothing would replace the turning of each page as the story unfolded before my eyes. Then I realized I could have all the books in the world in the palm of my hand everywhere I went. And this was a good thing. I keep a mixture of audio books, hardcovers, paperbacks and ebooks in my home and can say my reading experience is that much richer.

So of course, I wanted the same for my girl. As is the case with so many things in life, all we have to do is ask the universe. Here came AliceWinks!

The Story

Alicewinks is a multimedia iBook that brings the timeless illustrations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to life. I wasn't sure if the frog princess would be into it but apparently, I had nothing to worry about. At first, like her mami, she wasn't too sure about what this thing was. The first thing that surprised her was Alice winking. She winked back and from then on, they became fast friends.

Now you do know the story of Alice, right? It was written in 1865 and tells the story of a girl who goes on an adventure as she follows a curious white rabbit (sounds like the Matrix, doesn't it?).  If you haven't read it, I won't spoil it for you.

One of the things I love best about AliceWinks is the fact that they've brought 193 original illustrations from twelve early 20th century artists to life. Exposing the frog princess to good literature is only enhanced by exposing her to works of art.

The narration spans 19 voices reminiscent  of the great work that was done on the Narnia audio book series with the added bonus of having it paired up with animation that brings not only the story to life but to me, brings the history of this story to life as well. And that really resonates with this book lover.

The plan had not been to finish this book in one sitting. I planned to read, talk about it, ask questions and go about the book one chapter at a time. The kid stayed up past her bedtime because she did not want me to put the book away. The one chapter a night rule went out the window.

But the thing that made this bibliomaniac tear up? In the morning she awoke with a smile on her face and asked me if we could finish reading her book. Seems that, like Alice, my frog princess is perfectly happy following the rabbit down the rabbit hole in search of an adventure!

In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Alice’s Adventure’s in Wonderland, Alicewinks brings the story’s classic illustrations to life for digital audiences through animated video and rich narration. To download this one of a kind iBook, visit
