My Yellow Balloon

As soon as this book hit my inbox, I knew I had to read it and I knew I had to tell you about it. Dealing with loss in this household is a constant. My daughter speaks of my mom often, at times telling me she misses her very much. Some days, words fail me as I try to explain this loss to her. With an aging dog in the house, well, I feel like I need to prepare us for more loss in the future.

My_Yellow_BalloonTiffany Papageorge has created a beautiful, simple and powerful story to help us all out. It's called My Yellow Balloon.

It is the story of a young boy who gets a yellow balloon at the fair. We all know how attached our kids can get so yes, he loved this yellow balloon and took it everywhere. Until one day, the balloon slips from his hands. You know where this is going, right?

I was most taken aback by the colorless images as the boy's world is drained of color. Isn't that how we feel after losing a loved one? As if they took all the color away with them?

Little by little he starts to feel better. Still misses his balloon, though. Until one day...I won't give up the ending. You guys will just have to pick this up.

I thought it was a great story to share with the Frog Princess and one that I think we should all have handy in order to attempt to explain loss to our kids.

Have you talked to your kids about loss?
