14 Things I Love About the Frog Princess

My dearest Frog Princess, today is Valentine's day though from this point forth I shall call it Balemstimes since that's how you say it. This day is like any other aside from the fact that I had to create 24 gift bags for your classmates with something other than candy because I didn't want to be "that" parent this year. You bring me joy in ways I will never be able to describe and with everything going on right now, you are my beacon of laughter and love. I couldn't ask for anything better than you. Nothing and no one could replace this feeling. I am so proud and humbled to be your Mami.

Here's a short list of things I love...

  1. When you wake up, you look for me and snuggle up close so that we can have cuddle time
  2. That you make me laugh with silly dances on the bed
  3. The pure excitement and joy on your face as you take off your shirt all by yourself
  4. The fact that on some days, while I'm dressing you, you ask "Mami, can we have cuddles when I get home?" (the answer is always YES)
  5. The shows you put on in front of the mirrored closet doors and how you say "welcome ladies and gentlemen!" like there's really a crowd. Where did you learn that from?
  6. The wonder in your face when we capture a glimpse of something new
  7. How you pat/rub my hair and tell me it's beautiful even when it looks like a rat's nest
  8. Listening to your stories and how you speak with your hands and eyes. Also, the lisp. Lord help me, I know we've had speech therapy but I love the lisp
  9. The fact that you refuse to go to sleep before a million hugs and kisses
  10. Holding hands as you close your eyes before drifting off
  11. The whispered chant through slightly closed eyes of "I love you so, so much, Mami"
  12. The look of accomplishment on your face as we go through sight words
  13. The tears of exhaustion, frustration and fear that remind me suddenly of how fiercely I love you
  14. That in spite the hardships I've decided to live with as I try to work for myself, one reading session with you confirms that I am doing the right thing

Happy Valentine's Day, my soulful, smart, joyful, funny, beautiful Frog Princess.

The Keys to My Heart

Valentine's is right around the corner. If you've known me for any period of time you'll know that I am not a fan. I feel that it's an overly commercialized holiday that brings nothing but anxiety and/or disappointment. Also, I've seen women send themselves flowers or harass their spouses into sending gifts to the office so that they can act surprised and tell everyone about how in love they are. Again, not a fan. Except I'm kinda dating the father of my child so, I don't know how that all ranks. It's been strange and sorta fun getting to know one another and having a different kind of appreciation for the people that we've become. But that's another blog for another day.

Love is so much more than chocolate and flowers on Valentine's Day. This past weekend, I had a chance to experience a High Octane date. Yes, I am keeping ONE of my resolutions this year. If you are in Orlando, I have three words for you: Fogo de Chão. Go there. Not just on Valentine's Day but whenever you want a fun, vibrant dinner with delicious food that may or may not lead to good sleep thanks to the food coma. But, I digress.

The keys to my heart are simple. Or maybe not.  What happens the other 364 days of the year? How much am I being given? Not material things but time (my love language is QT) and energy. How much of yourself are you giving away those other days when the flowers are half the price and the chocolate would be much more appreciated. Hmmm, I'm beginning to think I need a special key ring for these keys.

Don't get me wrong, I am a romantic at heart. I love being swept off my feet. I just really dislike the expectation that it needs to happen in just one day. And I really dislike seeing my timeline riddled with women that feel anxious or disappointed that they're not getting what they think other women are. Let me tell you, most of what you see is illusion. Not to say that there aren't genuine, awesome couples out there but, I don't want my girls to feel bad or feel less than because of this one day.

I'm a "show me, show me you really love me" kind of girl. And the way to show me love is to commit to me. To respect me. To make me laugh. Sometimes, to make me mad. To not just agree with me or tell me what you think I want to hear. To (dare I say it) make me tingly, surprise me and keep things fun.

While you could probably do all of that in one day, I'd much rather it be done on the days when I'm too tired to get out of bed and perhaps need a bath to be run. Or a few hours to myself. Perhaps lunch or dinner when I haven't had time to go grocery shopping. If you really want the keys to my heart? Help me with my math homework!

One of my goals is to give my heart wholeheartedly. To hand over the keys to someone that I can trust with it. That will cherish it and make sure that everyone knows that is HIS heart and HE is happy to have it. Love is so much more than flowers and candy.

If you celebrate the holiday then I challenge you to do something Valentine-y on February 28. And on March 19. And on April 27. I'll take a wild guess that your gesture will be wildly appreciated on a day when there's no expectation.

Do you celebrate Valentine's Day? What are the keys to YOUR heart?

Cards From the Heart

Houston, we have a problem! I'd very much like you all to send a picture of me to all of the local places that sell cards with a note: do not let her shop! I'm so tired of buying cards. So tired of finding the perfect little something for each and every one of my friends. Hallmark, stop making awesome things! I should probably start a petition. Seriously. I'm done.

After Valentine's Day.

Why, you ask? I don't even know how to tell you this so, here's my attempt to tell my story in pictures...(someone queue the music)

I like these Blooming Expressions. They are pretty all year round and delivers a message of love and gratitude at the press of a button. And best of all, they won't die.

These Card Presenters are too adorable to pass up. How can I not pick the perfect little message for the frog princess? I'm pretty sure she'll love the outside more than the inside. And look at the little tic tac toe board!

Do I even have to say anything about this? I mean a puppy with a bow tie? It's everything!

Hallmark has been stalking me. How do I know this? Because they have managed to tie my book obsession with my card obsession! How adorable is this?!

And now for the coup de grace. I couldn't just give you an image of this because it would not do it justice. Check these out!

Now do you see the problem? Do you see why I have to stay out of these stores lest I run out of money to pay for my child's dance classes? I started making a list of all of the people who must get cards. Currently, my running tab is $2,678.22 (I have no idea where that $.22 came from by the way, let's just call it taxes).

I want to give a card to everyone in my Twitter timeline (hence the hefty price). But, seeing as I need to pay for such things as my car, school and groceries, I'm afraid I can't give the world my love through Hallmark.

But, I can give ONE of you a Blooming Expressions and greetings gift pack! You're Welcome!
