A Mami's Guide to 2014

I don't do resolutions but apparently, you guys want to know about them anyways. Last year I renamed them Mamilutions but I don't know if any of those got done (because why would I write down a bunch of stuff I want to do and then go back and periodically check to ensure I'm doing them?). 2014So here they are:

  1. Shower daily - this one is going to be hard but I am using my calendar to keep me on track. Don't judge me!
  2. Wear non-yoga pants at least 2 days a week even when I have no meetings
  3. Continue my search for an open trophy wife position
  4. Buy more yoga pants (in case #2 doesn't work out)
  5. Go to the movies
  6. Find a date to do #5 with
  7. Date more (so I can have more blogging material)
  8. Blog more (so I can have more dating material)
  9. Grow my readership (you can help with this!)
  10. Run (without being chased with a deadly weapon)
  11. Put the phone away for extended periods of time because you guys don't need to know every. single. awesome. thing that happens in my life. Okay, you do but, can you add "be okay with not knowing every single awesome thing that happens in Sili's life" to your resolutions? Thanks
  12. Write shorter posts so I can achieve #9 (start this one AFTER this post publishes)

After writing that out I will ad lib the final one: stress about the list I just made.

My friend Lucrecer got me thinking about this "word" thing. What's that? Well, instead of resolutions, you pick a word that has intention as to your goals for the coming year. So I started a list.

  • Organized
  • Peace
  • Blessings
  • Intent
  • Awesomeness
  • Groovy
  • Success
  • Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
  • Genesis
  • Positive
  • Free
  • Happy
  • Focus

I don't know if I can fit my goals into one word. I just want to make it y'all. I want to be successful. And let me define that word for you. To me success means:

  • Being able to drop off and pick up my girl without being in fear of losing my livelihood
  • Having enough time to sit with her and teach her how to read
  • I want to stress less
  • I want to live more
  • Enough money in the bank to take care of my needs, tithe, give some away to people in need and put money away for a rainy day (and the college fund)
  • Going on a real vacation with my girl (she wants to visit other countries, or so she claims)
  • Being  healthy & I want those around me to be the same
  • Helping others through Mamihood Media. But not just clients. I want to be able to help other Mamis define their own schedules while working their butts off at something they love

I was at church today and in the midst of the sermon, the pastor used a word. It is a word that always catches my heart because of a conversation my sister and I had a long time ago. I said that if I were ever to write a book about my parents, my mom in particular, it would be called Transcending. Because their stories are pretty amazing, all dysfunctions considered. And as I was typing these other words and starting to stress that I would be wordless for 2014, it hit me.

(v) \tran(t)-?send\ transitive verb 1: a : to rise above or go beyond the limits of b : to triumph over the negative or restrictive aspects of : overcome c : to be prior to, beyond, and above (the universe or material existence) 2: to outstrip or outdo in some attribute, quality, or power intransitive verb : to rise above or extend notably beyond ordinary limits

TranscendingThis is what I want. To rise above and go beyond the limits. The ones I've set for myself, the ones that have been set by others. I want to triumph over the negative. I want to overcome. I want to be above and beyond where I have been in the past. I want to outdo myself.

Dear 2014, I will be transcending all ovah you!

It is my sincerest hope and prayer that you find a word. Even if it is not one you say out loud. One that is in  your heart and that you will pour some energy into. One that will help you feel awesome, fresh, cool, accomplished and most importantly: happy.

May 2014 bring with it a wave of bliss and joy unlike any other. And may you tell your friends all about this blog so I can cross off one of the resolutions above. Feel free to subscribe to get new posts in your inbox (it's my blog and I'll promote if I want to).

Love you guys! Stay safe and don't forget to eat those black eyed peas (or lentejas).

13 Reasonable Resolutions for 2013

I don’t like resolutions and I rarely write any down. Partially because, who remembers any of them at the end of the year, right? This year, I had my resolutions stolen by Jenny from the Blog. She’s my new bloggie crush and I have mixed feelings about her getting in my head before I had time to sit down and write these resolutions. She totally jumped the gun. Now it means that I have to come up with a new resolutions list. 13 ResolutionsI’m taking a new approach this year. Setting my standards to a reasonable level in order to ensure total resolutionability (see #4 below). Are you ready? Here it goes:

  1. Use fabric softener – I admit, sometimes I forget to use it. And I really want my clothes to smell good. Don’t you? I already started accomplishing this resolution as I decided to buy me some Downy Unstoppable. To be honest, it doesn’t seem too unstoppably to me but, I could be wrong. Any suggestions on fabric softener that will leave my clothes smelling nice even if they, let’s say, stay in the basket for too long would be appreciated. I’d totally put “fold laundry” on the list but, I want to take this one step at a time.
  2. Take baths – I have not taken a bath since the last time I used my Spa Goodie Tin. You know what the sad part is? I have a jacuzzi tub! What a waste. I am resolving to take a bath at least once a month.
  3. Watch a new TV show – I have this in the bag, people! As we were heading out of town for Christmas, I decided to check out this Scandal business everyone’s been talking about. Needless to say I will be indisposed on Thursdays between the hours of 10 and 11 p.m. Please and thank you.
  4. Make up new words – I’m good at this and used to do it all the time. I’ve really gotten caught up in the whole proper language thing. Making up words is fun and it means that as I meet new people and interact with more folks, I can assign fresh new words to their personality, behavior and activities as I see fit. I’m a writer. It’s what I was meant to do.
  5. Buy more yoga pants – I mean, if I’m going to wear yoga pants, I need a better arsenal. Though I’m sure Jai is going to kick my behind and probably race down here to reorganize my closet and set aside special outfits for me on a daily basis (at least, I hope she does).
  6. Go out on dates – I’m tired of being at home. All the time. Don’t get me wrong, I totally don’t want the times when I’d be out every single weekend looking hawt, fabulous and FAUINE with heels, makeup, cute outfit and an entourage back. But, I do miss going to the movies, sitting in an outdoor café or just strolling around the lake without a tiny little hand to hold. I need grown up time. And so, I need dates.
  7. Paint my nails – Brittany from Clumps of Mascara has inspired me. I never paint my fingernails anymore. It seems cumbersome and besides, I can’t Tweet while my nails dry which is bordering on torture. But my hands look totally different and grown up when I paint my nails and, I think I could use some of that business.
  8. Turn 38 – you might think this is a freebie but it’s not. Keeping myself alive and healthy is a huge resolution to keep. What if the Mayans got the dates mixed up or something? Did anyone think about how in every other country the day and month are mixed up? What if someone forgot to carry the one? And let’s not even talk about the whole rapture thing. That could happen at any given point in time. In either case, I’m totally looking forward to checking this one off my list.
  9. Keep my room neat and organized – I’m on like day one of this and I’m kicking ass. Check back with me next week, will you? Inevitably, the underwear gnomes go in there and wreak havoc. Usually while I’m writing or sleeping. I haven’t caught them yet but, I wish they’d use their powers for good. Like folding my laundry.
  10. Send stuff via snail mail – cards, letters, notes, etc. I’m still on a high from getting my cards out for Christmas and feel very ambitious that I can get this done. Though I’m not setting a minimum limit here so, I figure if I send out one thing, I’m checking this off my list. Remember, people! Start small.
  11. Make money – I was let go from my job in September 2011. Since then, I’ve been sorta unemployed though you’d never know from the sheer number of projects that I can talk your ear off about. This year, I am looking forward to making more money freelancing, coaching and socialmediaworkinit. Cuz, that’s how I roll. Also, I need money to buy yoga pants, paint my nails, go on dates and turn 38.
  12. Color – I love coloring. It relaxes me. And it’s kinda fun. Though I don’t always like to color with the frog princess since she gets bossy and wants to color my pictures which means they’re all colored outside of the lines and in one solid color including the eyes which annoys me a little. I guess I should resolve to teaching her how to color but, she’s all “I’m a creative genius” type and might not go with the flow. Really, where does she get this from?
  13. Continue to blog – as I head to my 3rd blogging anniversary, I resolve to continue to blog, become a blogging superstar and remember all of the little people. Now, if only I could get you to share my posts and comment on all of the posts that you like, this list would be complete.

That’s all I got people. Oh I forgot to tell you: I’ve also changed the name of that drink I told you about over on Have Wine Will Drink from the Santa Baby to The Resolution. So I guess maybe I have 14 resolutions since one of them is in liquid form.

Now that I have shared my deepest, most treasured resolutions, share yours! What do you hope to accomplish in 2013?

I detest resolutions. Why? Because it's like they were born to be broken. No, no, no! I will have NO resolutions in 2012! Instead, I think I'll come up with some mamilutions. You might be asking yourself, mami, what in the hell are mamilutions? Well, I'll tell you. Give me a second while I make up the definition.

Mamilutions - tasks, goals or targets put forth by a tired, overworked, imaginative mami that's ultimately trying to change the world. These goals can be as big or small as she wants and they can be changed whenever she feels like it in order to appear as if they are complete. The ultimate goal of these are to do away with the resolutions that are brought forth during this time and only make us feel bad about not keeping them.

Mamilutions are sure to make you feel empowered, energized and provide you with the mami swagger that you need in 2012. I'm still working on my list but, my mamilutions so far are as follows:

  1. Get a tattoo of a gardenia (any artists out there? I'm currently taking drawings. Don't you want your artwork fabulously displayed on this beautiful cafe con leche skin?)
  2. Be okay with being distracted by Pinterest (I went to my browser for a reason I can't recall and have just spent the last 20 minutes looking at a variety of things including at this death star cookie jar  and this awesome machine that makes pencils out of paper! If you don't already know, I love pencils and write with them all the time)
  3. Buy the pencil making machine mentioned above
  4. Stop judging people that misspell words (I may need to get therapy to make this one happen. Oh, I was reminded of that thanks to a new pin.)
  5. Work out at least ONE day in 2012. "Work out" is defined as any type of activity that will raise my heart rate. This includes a dance game in the Wii that my bro just got the frog princess, yoga, Ripped In 30, driving past Krispy Kreme and seeing the "HOT" light on or 30 minutes in the presence of Shemar Moore (currently watching Criminal Minds, can you tell?)
  6. Change the world by continuing to provide mamis and babies here and in other countries what they might need in order to be reminded that someone out there cares about them
  7. Read one non-picture book a month (aggressive, I know)
  8. Find a brand crazy forward-thinking enough to hire me
  9. Make an appearance at 2 bloggers conferences sponsored by some awesome people (email me if you're awesome enough to handle this)
  10. Keep smiling, keep positive and be okay on the days when I am not (because I have some cool people like you in my life to remind me of this one)

That's all I have right now. Mostly because I'm busy trying to watch Criminal Minds while cruising Pinterest and wondering if it would seem like a bad gesture if I reach around the guys fixing the fridge to grab a glass of wine.

Can you think of some mamilutions to start your list?
